[The following is a designated ‘John-only‘ to-do]
As far as climbing goes, I’m really just a beginner. A good friend of mine, Daniel Moore, has been kind enough to take me under his wing and has been instructing me on how to do stuff without killing myself. Unfortunately he lives in Kingston, so I’ve been climbing at the Rock Oasis on my lonesome in Toronto for the past several months.
After about 6 months of bouldering, I finally felt strong enough to make the leap and recently took a lead climbing course under the quality supervision of Cort McElroy at the Rock Oasis. I managed to make my way up a 5.10c in the gym on lead last week, so I’m only two grades away from bagging that 5.11; another to-do on the list.
The pictures posted here are from an excursion to Kingston with Daniel this past weekend. Only one of them is actually me leading a climb. Two are top roping but I figured they were cool enough pictures. Among this being my first outdoor lead climb, I also onsited my first outdoor (5.9), learned how to set gear for a top rope, and rappelled for the first time (using a Prusik knot).
Congratulations John!
It is nerve racking trusting a repel to a prusik isn’t it?
When are you going to start taking on trad climbing?
Congrats!!
Russ
Well, the prusik was in combination with an ATC, but still it’s a crazy knot. As far as trad…once I start hitting 5.11’s on lead regularly I’ll start working on trad, so hopefully beginning of next year. It’s great to have Dan a few steps ahead of me because he can just teach me everything he’s learned, and believe it or not there’s a pretty crazy climbing community in Kingston so he’s learning fast. Cheers!
