[The following is a designated ‘John-only‘ to-do]
Somewhere along its 108-year history, Ovaltine lost its mojo. Once considered “everyone’s favourite bedtime beverage,” the brand has gone into virtual obscurity over the last decade. Ask a 10-year old what Ovaltine is and he or she will likely shrug their shoulders. Parents don’t buy Ovaltine anymore (not like their parents use to). Blame it on an over-saturated market; bad marketing tactics; Ovaltine’s inability to recreate itself. Whatever the reason, I can’t help but feel a little sad for this vitamin-enriched malt coco drink.
Unlike John, I grew up on Ovaltine. My dad served it to me, just as his mom served it to him. I never much liked the stuff, but it was comfortable. Wholesome. I felt good drinking it. I knew it was “good for me” and so I took enjoyment sipping it slowly.
The other day we found a container of Classic Ovaltine at our local market. Yesterday we prepared a batch in a hot thermos bottle and went for a walk in the neighbourhood. It tasted exactly how I remembered: mild, a little nutty, almost like watered down hot-chocolate. John enjoyed, but not really. Not a lot. And that’s ok. For me, it’s a nostalgic thing.
Oh, check this out…
Wow! That’s my all-time fave drink too when I was a kid. Even recall snacking on spoonfuls of the Ovaltine crystals/powder WITHOUT the milk/water. YUMMY! You should try that too!
I didn’t like Ovaltine so I drank Milo before bed instead.
