The Monkey Wrench Gang is a fictional story written by Edward Abbey (one of my favourite American authors). It tells the account of a motley crew of four “environmental warriors” who decide to take the law into their own hands through a practice they dubbed “monkey-wrenching” (sabotage for the sake of protecting the wilderness).
The National Observer called the book “A sad, hilarious, exuberant, vulgar fairy tale that will make you want to go out and blow up a dam.” I would say that’s pretty accurate. I might also add: This book will make you want to steal cop cars, drive drunk on lonely desert roads, and set billboards ablaze, too. Naturally, I had to read it alone, over candle light, while yogacizing on my floor.
