212) Eat a bug 5 Sep 2012

{Note: This here is the second to-do of ten completed this past weekend at John’s family’s place. We’ll be posting these gradually throughout the week, as they happened. For the sake of naming things, we’re calling this weekend Laura & John’s Ultimate Thrifty To-Do Marathon}

THRIFT TIP #2:
Bugs are a thrift-astic meal option

Throughout the world people eat bugs as part of their daily lives. In places where protein sources are rare, they are a vital part of the diet. Bugs can also be a great source of vitamins, minerals, and fats; they’re also 100% FREE (if you find them on the side of the road like us.)

If you’re curious about trying bugs, we recommend you start off easy with some chocolate covered grasshoppers. The general consensus in our group was that they were: “surprisingly not bad!” “crunchy” and “weird!”

How to Make Chocolate Covered Grasshoppers

First, find some grasshoppers. Then, stick them in the freezer for a few hours. Once they’re dead, pull out their legs and wings and stick them in the oven to bake for 15-20 minutes at 400 degrees. While they’re roasting, melt some chocolate in a pan until completely gooey. Once your little guys are crispy, dip them one by one in your chocolate sauce and stick them in the freezer to cool.

Tip: They’ll go down much easier if you pretend you’re chewing chocolate covered corn flakes.
